Phase three of the Pacific Islands Project PIP which is also known as the Provision of a range of Tertiary and Health Services to Pacific Island Countries, has just being carried out in Tuvalu in the last week.

260 patients were seen by the ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) team in the few days the team was here for last week.

According to surgeon and team leader Elizabeth Rose, 14 of the 260 needed to be operated on.

The team comes to Tuvalu under a project that provides short term visits of medical specialties to 11 Pacific island countries. These medical specialties include cardiac surgery, ENT, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, psychiatry, urology, radiology and a diabetic training program.

The team which is managed by the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS), and funded by The Australian Government through the Australian Agency for International Development AusAID, aims to work closely as possible with local doctors and medical staff to help develop their skills so that they will be able to continue to provide these types of services in the future.

The team included Ms Rose, another surgeon Dr Suren Krishnan, anaesthetist Dr Simon Macklin and Nurse Ms Nicole Zweck.

All surgeons and the nurse are voluntters and do not get paid for their time and services

The team left the country on yesterday’s flight.
