400 grand needed for TAS
The Tuvalu Sports Association TAS is in need of 300 or 400 thousand dollars to cover all the teams and officials’ expenses to the South Pacific Games 2007 in Samoa.
Robert Laupula Tuvalu Sports Officer stated the Association has agreed to raise funds to assist the teams to the Games and activities that had been planned by the TAS include Bingo, Kati, Twist and Raffle Tickets. These are expected to be finalized this week.
He says if the grant from the government amounts to one hundred thousand dollars, the Association will only work on the remaining amount to top up the amount needed.
Four sponsors have confirmed their Assistance for the Association, and they include the National bank of Tuvalu, Development Bank of Tuvalu, Tuvalu Cooperative Society and Tuvalu Provident Fund. TAS is requesting everyone to help with the fundraising activities to support Tuvalu teams to the SPG.
TAS has yet to become a national Olympic Committee but is eligible to become one. Dennis Miller Regional Sports Development Officer based in the Oceania National Olympic Committee office in Suva visited Tuvalu last month to follow up on discussions with TAS, and finalise paperwork and application so Tuvalu can become recognized as a National Olympic committee NOC.
Mr. Miller told Tuvalu news during his visit that Tuvalu is the last country in the region that’s eligible to become a NOC. It’s being independent makes it eligible and it also meets the criteria of having at least 5 national sports federations that are recognized by their relevant international sports federations. Tuvalu meets that as well with basketball, volleyball, weightlifting, boxing, tennis and table tennis as the sports federations already affiliated to their international bodies.
The beauty of becoming a National Olympic Committee is Tuvalu Sports Association may no longer need to look for money as IOC will pay for everything they might need.
