They talked with Air Fiji about its current service to Tuvalu and according to Acting Secretary of the ministry Tapugao Falefou, Air Pacific has also shown interest in servicing the Funafuti/Fiji route under the service of its Pacific Sun.

He said this proposal will be taken to the Cabinet this week for consideration.

In more news Convair which is under lease by Air Fiji from New Zealand’s Catham Air, is in the category of bigger planes therefore requiring a bigger airstrip space. This resulted in trees beside the airstrip being cut down recently according to requirements of a transitional slope that planes in this category require.

In the first survey done by Civil Aviation of Fiji and New Zealand’s Civil Aviation, they required 90 metres of airstrip, 7 metres of clear space after that and one metre high as well as another 7 metres and 2 metres high of clear space.

The island’s problem of lack of land was put to them and they agreed not to cut down the trees or clear houses but the ministry had also requested if the 90 metre could be reduced to 80 metres instead.

Initially they had said it is difficult but talks with Air Fiji gave the government hope that it might be possible.
