Diabetes ? a problem in Tuvalu
By Yvette D’Unienville
The number of diabetes cases in Tuvalu is increasing every year, the Health Educator Mrs. Avanoa Paelate told Tuvalu news.
She says there are two types of diabetes. Type one usually affects children from age one to 24 years old, which Tuvalu does not have many of, however type 2 diabetes which affects ages of 25 upwards affects a lot of people and has also increased.
Diabetes is major threat to global public health and has increased to 180 million, likely to more than double in 2030.
It has already killed 1.1 million people in the world in 2005 according to Mrs Paelate.
The Health Department of Tuvalu has been educating the public through radio programs about the disease and ways to control and prevent those who have not been affected.
The department urges the public to eat food that do not contain sugar, and to always drink a cup of water every hour and to also do physical activities.
