Mangrove to be planted on Funafala beach
By Silafaga Lalua
Two professors from Japan are in the country upon an invitation from non-government organization Tuvalu Overview to carry out investigations on the possibility of planting mangroves on Funafuti.
Dr Shigeyuki Baba and Dr. Miyagi went to Funafala yesterday to measure the height of the land from sea level and also to identify a good place to plant mangroves.
Dr. Miyagi told Tuvalu news that a small area of the sandy beach of Funafala is suitable for mangroves. They also investigated other islets beside Funafala but either the current is to strong there or it is too deep for mangroves.
Dr. Baba from the International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems ISME and Dr. Miyagi from the University of Tohoku Gakuin, said mangroves will help reduce the effect of coastal erosion on the atolls, and they had seen a lot of that around as an effect of global warming.
Tuvalu news was told that a report will be submitted to the government of Tuvalu of their findings and if the government further request for their assistance in planting mangroves they will be very happy to do it.
Their being here is sponsored by Cosmo Oil, Japan.
NGO Tuvalu Overview coordinated this trip together with Marie Claire magazine that is also here to conduct shootings.
