Native Land amendment Act 2006
By Yvette D’Unienville
The period for a Lease or sublease may be reduced to 25 years if the Native Lands Amendment Bill 2006 is passed in the upcoming Parliament session where the Native Lands Amendment Act 2006 will be introduced.
According to the Acting Attorney General Ese Apinelu, this is an act to amend the Native Lands Act (cap 22) to reduce the period of a lease or sublease from 99 years to 25 years.
This Bill amends section 33 of the Native lands Act by reducing the maximum term of a lease or a sublease from 99 years to 25 years.
This limit may only be exceeded upon approval of the Minister.
The Bill will have retrospective effect for leases and subleases already executed for a longer period than 25 years.
