Social Welfare concerns for the disadvantaged

Conditions of vulnerable and disadvantaged people are the main reason for the Community Affairs Officer’s trip to Nanumea island yesterday.
Teuleala Manuella traveled to Nanumea on the Manufolau’s trip that left Funafuti yesterday morning. She is going to conduct a workshop that will look into the conditions of vulnerable and disadvantaged people including old people of the island, the same workshop that she conducted in Funafuti and Nukufetau.
Together with participants, they will find out what social welfare services this particular group needs, what approach should be adopted when contacting them and also see if have any special needs.
In the last couple of islands she noticed that the care for this particular group of people has deteriorated, probably caused by depopulation of outer islands when younger, abler people migrate to the capital leaving the elderly without anyone to care for them.
Part of the workshop programme will be to pay home visits to the target group and carry out a survey to help identify the group’s status and needs.
Participants will be pastors, red cross members, women and youth representatives, nurse, operator, Kaupule members and teachers.
This workshop is an activity under a three year project namely the Social Development Policy which is funded by the United Nations Development Programme UNDP.
Ms Manuella will remain on Nanumea until the 28 of this month.
