Telephone lines on Vaitupu down

Parents and caregivers of students at Motufoua High School on Vaitupu were not able to give encouraging messages to their children for their final year exams during the last two weeks because the telephone lines were down.
Acting General Manager of Tuvalu Telecommunication Corporation TTC Kokea Logo told Tuvalu news that the satellite’s modem which receives data from Funafuti did not work.
TTC’s Chief Engineer Anisi Penitusi took the matching modem to the island in the last trip of the MV Manufolau and discovered that the solar charged batteries that run the modem expired their 6 years life span hence causing problems to the phone lines.
Logo said the batteries were first installed in 1995 and although they had expired they still work- but to a much lesser capacity.
While Vaitupu’s matching modem was away TTC used Nukulaelae’s modem at night so phone lines and radio can be relayed on Vaitupu.
Tuvalu news understands that both modems of Vaitupu still work efficiently and the island’s matching modem was brought back to Funafuti on the Manufolau yesterday.
