Tuvalu hires side lifter from Fiji

Tuvalu government’s marine department has taken to hire equipment from overseas to carry out stevedore jobs in the country. A side lifter was hired from Fiji to carry cargoes from vessels when its fork lift broke down two months ago.
Reports from Tuvalu Cooperative Society TCS stated that it is paying the charge of Aus$1,000 a day for this side lifter, starting from October 4th when it arrived in the country, a charge they will later claim from the Marine department.
The equipment was supposed to have been uplifted for Fiji on the previous trip of the MV Nivaga II to Fiji but the vessel’s two winches could not lift it on to the vessel. Arrangements were then made with the owner of the Southern Moana and agreed the Southern Moana to uplift the side lifter to Fiji this time.
The Southern Moana was delayed for a few hours last Saturday because its hook slings dropped into the lagoon, which the stevedores retrieved.
The vessel will drop off the side lifter at Fiji when it has called to Wallis and Futuna and it’s next trip to Tuvalu is expected on the 29th of this month.
