Nanumea islanders celebrate christmas
By Semi Malaki
People on the island of Nanumea are very much in the mood for Christmas as they celebrate.
Celebrations started on Sunday with a hymn competition between the two village side Lolua and Haumaefa.
On Monday morning the islanders worshipped together in a special service for Christmas before they gathered again for lunch at the Nameana 2.
On Boxing Day celebrations continued with feasting before the traditional game of Te ano between men of Lolua and Haumaefa. At the end of the day traditional dance or fatele between the two sides highlighted the night’s programme with ten dances each.
The general feel among the islanders was that the night dance was hair-raising and very entertaining, resulting in a very late night for everyone concerned.
Celebrations continued again this morning with te ano between men of the two sides- very early in the morning before breakfast, and continued again with the game the rest of the day.
It is expected that celebrations end tomorrow, but Tuvalu news understands youth members on the island may have more celebrations already on their agenda.
