$120,000 approved for house subsidies

By Silafaga Lalua

A 120 thousand dollar budget has been approved by the government to subsidize house rents for civil servants this year.

Olioliga Iosua, Acting Secretary for Personnel and Training told Tuvalu news that the 120 thousand dollars is double the amount of last year’s allocation for subsidies, which was 60, 000 dollars.

27 civil servants were approved to have their house rents subsidized by the government this year, adding on to the 23 from last year.

4 of the 27 openings this year are from civil servant tenants who do not require the government assistance any longer.

The amount of government subsidy for a single house depends on the civil servant’s salary and their eligibility for housing under their salary level.

Ms Iosua said there are about a hundred more civil servants waiting to use this privilege but there is a shortage of houses on Funafuti, and that cannot happen immediately.

Tuvalu news was informed that a civil servant needs to apply to have his or her house subsidized and will be given that upon satisfying certain criteria.

Length of time of work, number of dependants, salary and time of application are all important to giving the civil servant points that would help them get a subsidized house.
