Demonstration farm faces problems
By Silafaga Lalua
Seedlings waiting to be picked up by home gardeners are growing too old and result in them being thrown away.
Song-Pey Lee from the garden stressed the frustration they get from unused seedlings that get dumped at the end of the day and are wasted.
The problem, Mr Lee told Tuvalu news, is that gardeners are faced with shortage of sand, compost and water at their homes therefore they cannot continue to plant new seedlings.
The cost of all these things may be too much for home gardeners and discourage them to continue gardening.
As a result of this the nurseries at the farm are full up, and most of the seedlings are too old and not worth keeping.
Seedlings of three varieties of cabbage, bele, cucumber, capsicum, chilli and eggplant are in desperate need of distribution as the farm uses a lot of water to keep them well until gardeners transplant them to their own gardens.
Mr Lee urges all home gardeners, and new gardeners to come to the farm and pick up seedlings.
Relying on farm produce every Friday morning may not be ideal as there will not be enough vegetables for all customers.
