Island special public holidays

By Silafaga Lalua

Apart from statutory holidays already in the 2007 year calendar, each island of the nation also has a specific day that they celebrate each year.

Nanumea’s Te Po o Tefolaha start off the year on the 8th of January, Nukufetau’s Te Aso O Tutasi comes in on the 11th of February, while Nui’s Bongin the Ieka falls on the 16th of the same month.

Nanumaga will celebrate its Aho o te Fakavae on April 15th, while Nukulaelae celebrates its Aso o te Tala Lei on May 10th.

People of Niutao will again gather to celebrate Te Aso o te Setema on September 17th, while Funafuti people everywhere will celebrate Hurricane Bebe day on the 21st of October.

Vaitupu will be the last island to celebrate its annual day Te Aso Fiafia on November 25th.
