Rural Development department execute project tasks

In an attempt to strengthen local governance Specialists within the Department of Rural Development are going to conduct trainings on the outer islands.

Albert Seluka the Legal Specialist and Lutelu Faavae the Financial Management Specialist will travel on the next boat to Vaitupu and Nui islands to conduct trainings for Kaupule and Falekaupule members on the islands.

The training will be mainly on capacity building in the area of the Falekaupule Act among others.

It will also emphasize the concept of good governance under the Bill of Rights, as well as the Business Act.

The pair will remain on each island for 2 to 3 weeks and will train Falekaupule and Kaupule members, staff within the Kaupule as well as the civil society representatives.

Iete Avanitele the Director of Rural Development told Tuvalu news that the training had been conducted in Nanumaga and Nukufetau in October and November last year, and expected to

Avanitele also said that this is a main activity for “Strengthening Local Governance” project.

This is a 2 year project starting from 2005 and is funded by UNDP. It’s supposed to end this year but as Avanitele stated, there is a possibility it will extend.
