TANGO delegation to Minister of Home Affairs
By Silafaga Lalua
A delegation from Tuvalu Association of Non Governmental Organisations TANGO visited with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Secretary and Assistant Secretary, in the second week of this month.
The visit was to meet with the Honourable Minister of TANGO’s new line ministry; to present TANGO Constitution and Strategic Plan 2005 to 2008 and to discuss issues of interest or concern to TANGO, its members and the Tuvalu community as a whole.
TANGO requested the tabling of the NGO Bill at the next Parliament session and also asked for the minister’s assistance during this visit.
Given the lack of provisions in the Tuvalu Laws to legally register non-for profit organizations, TANGO initiated the move for an NGO bill and enactment.
Various stakeholders which include TANGO members, and many others have all been involved in the various consultations through workshops, meetings, consultations etc.
Coordinator of TANGO Annie Homasi told Tuvalu news that this had been on going since 2001.
Forum Secretariat saw this important need and allowed its employee Mose Saitala to be engaged by TANGO to assist with facilitation and consultations.
Homasi stated that she introduced the draft bill to the new line ministry in early 2006 while working continuously with the AG’s office on any further requirements.
At the end of the visit, TANGO and the ministry agreed to earnestly work towards the tabling of the Bill for March Parliament.
