The representative for the South Pacific Board for Education Assessment SPBEA is in the country to verify the Pacific Secondary School Certificate.
Dr. U'hila Moe Lagi Fasi - the senior professional officer of SPBEA, assisted by senior education officer, assessment and exams from the department of education Michael Noa, traveled to Vaitupu recently to carry out the verification, among other tasks.
Director of Education of the department Katalina Taloka stated to Tuvalu news that the verification will include the managing of qualifications of teachers whose students will sit the exam at the end of the year, especially in the internal assessment component.
By the end of the verification period, Ms Taloka said that teachers should be able to follow the programmes set out for the exam, and should also be able to meet deadlines for all internal assessments.
The other two tasks the pair set out to do is create an English prescripiton for the Tuvalu School Certificate TSC, and also to train examiners and moderators for the TSC and the year 8 examination.
Ms Taloka stated that in the meantime, the English paper is being produced in Kiribati with the department adapting it to suit Tuvalu.
Consequently there are hopes to have it produced locally using the manpower and expertise that the school and the department has, and to start this year, with the education department monitoring it.
Tuvalu news was informed that the Tuvalu school certificate and year eight examination are being moderated by SPBEA, so all staff of the school, especially heads of departments are being trained to be moderators for both exam papers.
The pair will be returned to the capital on the last voyage of the MV Manufolau from Vaitupu..
