By Silafaga Lalua
Turtles were tagged and released in the Funafuti lagoon at the closing of the turtle awareness workshop last Friday.
The workshop lasted from Tuesday and ended on Friday afternoon at the Lotokava Falekaupule.
Participants of the workshop revealed that the workshop had been an eye opener to the lives of the turtles that are evidently gong extinct.
They were informed on the life cycle of the turtle and also on the proven data that tells how many species of turtles exist.
Falefaea Tapumanaia, an elder of the island of Funafuti, and a participant at the workshop, stated to Tuvalu news that he found the workshop very informing, and would like to see it taken to the outer islands so all islanders can be informed of the issue of deteriorating turtle numbers.
He further stated leaders of the nation should be one with people in raising awareness about the issue, and also to establish laws that help protect not only turtles but other species in the sea as well.
Acting Minister of Natural Resources Hon Sir. Toomu Sione, officially closed the workshop before handing out each participant's certificate.
He was also given the honour to tag the first of the four turtles before it, along with another other three, were released in the Funafuti lagoon that afternoon.
Both the participants and the resource persons of the workshop urge the public not to capture the turtles, as they are part of the awareness programme into saving the turtle species.
