Tuvalu Media to be de-corporatised
By Silafaga Lalua
Tuvalu Media Corporation is going through its last days as a semi-government entity before it becomes a government department once again.
The de-corporatisation is in process with the Tuvalu Media Corporation Repeal Bill 2007
which is to be tabled in the upcoming Parliament Session next fortnight.
The purpose of the Bill is to repeal the Tuvalu Media Corporation Act 1999. If the Bill becomes an Act, Tuvalu Media Corporation will cease to operate as a separate legal corporate entity.
At the end of 2004, all Corporations were reviewed and TMC was recommended to be de-corporatised based on its inability over extended periods to financially sustain its commercial activities and operations.
A yearly subsidy of $AUS80, 000 is currently being provided by the government of Tuvalu and has been since 2005. It is a decrease from 300,000 dollars since it became a Corporation in 2000.
The Tuvalu Media Corporation Amendment Bill 2007 is one of six Bills to be tabled in this session.
Other Bills include 2007 Supplementary Appropriation Bill 2007, Provident Fund Amendment Bill, Citizenship Amendment Bill, Audit Bill 2007, and National Disaster Management Bill.
The Parliament session will convene at 10 o’clock on Wednesday morning 25th July, 2007.
