Tuvalu Round Table Meeting opening

By Silafaga Lalua

The second Kakeega Donor Round Table Meeting, opened by Prime Minister Apisai Ielemia on Wednesday morning July 4th 2007 at the government building, has four broad objectives.

The objectives are; to reinvigorate, sustain, and implement Kakeega II; to better coordinate ? to the extent possible ? planned public and private sector investment, funded domestically or by donors; to intensify donor partnerships; and to better align donor aid with Te Kakeega II, and the Kakeega Matrix.

The one day meeting includes donor friends of Tuvalu from abroad, and Prime Minister said in his speech that they, plus regional organizations played a pivotal role in the formulation of the Kakeega II, and it is in the same spirit of partnership that Tuvalu is hosting the second Kakeega donor Round Table Meeting.

The first Round Table Meeting was held in May 2006 in Suva and the outcome of that was the Kakeega II Matrix, covering 2006 to 2008, and where activities that were deemed the most urgent and in need of external assistance, specifically identifying where donor support was required, and were listed as priorities.

Prime Minister said he believes it is important to revisit what the people of Tuvalu set out in Kakeega II, so there is a clear understanding of why a yearly measure of progress on the implementation of Kakeega II is necessary, stating the Kakeega vision which states that “by 2015, guided by strong spiritual values enshrined in our motto ? Tuvalu mo te Atua ? we will have achieved a healthy, educated, peaceful and prosperous Tuvalu.
