Prime Minister of Tuvalu has returned from Taiwan

By Silafaga Lalua

The Prime Minister of Tuvalu is back in the country after attending the opening of International wheelchair and amputees sports games in Taiwan this month.

This was an invitation from the government of Taiwan and Prime Minister Apisai Ielemia was one of the guests of honour at the ceremony, along with representatives of other governments.

Speaking to Tuvalu news this afternoon, Hon Ielemia said he was able to talk with several representatives of governments and organisations on his way to Taiwan, including the Ambassador of Japan based in Fiji His Excellency Masashi Namekawa.

They discussed about national projects that Japan is assisting with like the new wharf, Tuvalu’s AM band, the new airfield and any other project that Japan might be able to help Tuvalu with.

Ielemia stated they need to be reminded often about their assistance so there can be no delay when it is time to implement the projects.

He also had time to talk with Greg Urwin the secretary general of the Forum Secretariat on issues that Tuvalu is going to raise during the Pacific Island leaders’ meeting in Tonga next month.

One of the issues will be the climate change, and its impacts on the country and most importantly the assistance that Tuvalu and other low lying island countries need.

He understands it is well repeated but it needs to be heard by those who can do something to help other who are in need.
