South Korea is donating 200 thousand for Tuvalu

By Silafaga Lalua

South Korea had agreed to commit 200 thousand US dollars to the government of Tuvalu.

The Prime Minister of Tuvalu Hon Apisai Ielemia talked to Tuvalu news this Monday afternoon and revealed that on his way to Taiwan earlier this month he managed to meet and talked with the Ambassador of South Korea where the Ambassador agreed for the funds to be used for national projects.

Hon Ielemia said the government will select the right projects for this funding which the government of Korea will release upon receiving proposals for them.

Another issue discussed with the Ambassador was the inclusion of Tuvalu as a member of the Bureau for International Expo BIE.

Tuvalu news learnt that South Korea is bidding to host the 2012 world expo and would like Tuvalu’s assistance for that.

To be a member of the BIE a yearly fee is to be paid and Ielemia used the opportunity of the talk with Ambassador to request South Korea to pay for Tuvalu’s five year fee to be a member of BIE.

Besides that Ielemia also requested South Korea to meet funding for officers to attend meetings leading up to the expo.

The host for the next expo will be determined at a meeting this November.
